Did you know?
The name “Mitcham” is thought to be of Old English origin meaning big settlement. Prior to Roman and Saxon occupation, there was a Celtic settlement there and some evidence can still be seen in the Pollards Hill area. The discovery of Roman graves together with a water well on the site of the modern-day Mitcham gas works suggests that it was indeed occuppied by the Romans. There is also a Saxon graveyard on the North bank of the River Wandle which is the largest discovered to date and many artifacts that have been found there are on display in the British Museum. some scholars suggest that Mitcham and other Thames Valley settlements were some of the very first areas to be populated by the Anglo Saxons. The area is thought to be a possible location for the Battle of Merton which took place in 871AD where King Ethelred of Wessex was either mortally wounded or killed.
