Did you know?
Vauxhall Cross has a very interesting plot of land on it. This plot first became of note when the world-famous Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens was built on it in the 19th Century. Pleasure Gardens were a Georgian idea, a privately owned green space that provided leisure and entertainment in the summer months. The one at Vauxhall was considered to be the best in the capital. After its demolition in 1850, the site saw various building come and go, including a glass factory, a vinegar works and a gin distillery.
However, the plot is now famous for having the £130 million SIS building on it; the home of MI6. The majority of this building is underground, and the layout is protected by the Official Secrets Act; although, rumour has it that it includes an underground tunnel leading to Whitehall.
