Did you know?
Battersea is the home of Europe’s busiest train station; Clapham Junction. Why is the station called Clapham Junction and not Battersea? Well, the station was built because the area was one of heavy industry, the lavender trade in particular (hence the street name ‘Lavender Hill’, on which the station is situated); and so, easy access was required for the large daily influx of workers. Clapham was the affluent area next door. So, to attract the middle-classes, they named the station after the well-to-do village.
The station now accommodates 17 platforms, which see 180 trains pass through them every hour at peak times. The ‘train count’ per day is now at around 2000.
